Deposition
Sworn testimony given before trial, usually in response to questions from the attorneys, and recorded for later use in the case.
A deposition is testimony under oath, taken outside court, with a court reporter producing a transcript. It is a routine part of discovery in contested matters.
Its purposes are practical: to learn what a witness will say, to lock in that account before trial, and to obtain admissions that can support or defeat a motion. A transcript can be used to contradict a witness who says something different later.
Preparation matters more than people expect. The obligation is to answer the question asked, truthfully and no further, and the most common difficulty is volunteering information that was never sought.
